About Me!

Hi there! My name is Sophia April and I am 5’1” on a good day with heels. I grew up in Delray Beach, Florida (the sunshine state) with my adorable Bichon Frise puppy named Swiffer (yes, named after the Wet Jet cleaner).

I began my training at American Heritage, where my heart was captured by the magic of the theatre. My first musical was Freckleface Strawberry, where I played Emily. My solo was entitled, “I Like Danny.” After 5 minutes passed by, I think the audience knew I liked Danny. Throughout my 4 years in high school, I was a ShowChoir girl who joined the Tri M music honor society and International Thespian honor society. I should’ve invested in a futon mattress because my home away from home was the theater and forever will be.

Skipping ahead in time, I recently earned a BFA in Musical Theatre with an emphasis in Voice Performance from Lynn University. I got to check off a dream role on my bucket list, “Fanny Brice” in the musical Funny Girl. After leading vocals on 14 songs, memorizing 200 lines, and making 16 costume changes throughout the 3 hour production, “Fanny Brice” gave me the confidence and charisma that anything is possible. Every spring semester, I joined the creative team as artistic director and coordinator for the annual Celebration of the Arts Unplugged Showcase. My mission was to implement the theme, design the space, and create the rehearsal schedule.

Thanks to the unwavering support and knowledge I have gained in the South Florida community, I am excited to begin my next chapter at NYU Steinhardt to pursue my Master of Arts degree in Performing Arts Administration. I will be residing in NYC. My ultimate goal is to perform under the Broadway stage lights both in New York City and the West End as well as join national tours. My personal goal is to cultivate a theater house, complete with a season that will test my directorial capacities as well as offer platforms for all creative voices. I am willing to inspire future artists in the making and foster dialogue within the community through the art that is produced.

In my free time, I love dressing in a turtleneck sweater and going ice skating to escape the Florida summer heat. During our cooler months in December and January, morning beach yoga is simply the best. I enjoy watching romantic comedies (aka rom coms) in a cozy blanket—with a side of Chick-fil-A Mac and cheese. I am inspired by empowering female vocalists and artists, especially Barbra Streisand, Liza Minelli, Cynthia Erivo, and Lady Gaga. I am a devoted fan of the Supernatural Thriller Netflix series, Stranger Things. And oy vey, I have a serious fear of lizards.
